Which Image Format Should You Use?

FormatBest ForTransparencyFile Size
PNGLogos, screenshots, graphics with textYesLarger
JPGPhotographs, complex imagesNoSmall
WebPWeb images, modern browsersYesSmallest
GIFSimple animations, 256-color graphics1-bit onlySmall for simple

Rule of thumb: Use PNG for images that need transparency or sharp edges. Use JPG for photos where smaller file size matters. Use WebP for web pages where browser support isn't a concern (all modern browsers support it).

Converting Image Formats in GIMP

In GIMP, use File → Export As to convert between formats. Simply change the file extension in the filename and GIMP will automatically use the correct format settings. After clicking Export, a format-specific dialog lets you configure quality and advanced options.

To convert many images at once, use the BIMP plugin (Batch Image Manipulation Plugin) which supports batch format conversion.

Conversion Choices That Affect Quality

Changing formats is not always neutral. JPG removes transparency and uses lossy compression. PNG preserves hard edges and transparency, but can be much larger for photos. WebP is usually smaller than both, but some older desktop workflows still expect PNG or JPG.

Format Decision Guide

Not sure which format to convert to? Find your situation below.

Photo for a website or blog post

Convert to WebP (best size) or JPG at quality 80-85 (best compatibility). Both keep photos looking sharp at a fraction of PNG size.

Logo, screenshot, or graphic with text

Convert to PNG. JPG compression blurs sharp edges and makes text fuzzy. PNG keeps hard lines pixel-perfect.

Image with a transparent background

Convert to PNG or WebP. JPG has no alpha channel and fills transparency with solid white. Verify the result with the transparency checker.

Image you plan to keep editing

Do not convert at all. Keep the original (or a GIMP .xcf master) and only convert the final copy. Repeated lossy conversion degrades quality every time. The full format rules are in the save vs export guide.

Email attachment with a size limit

Convert to JPG, then run it through the image compressor to shrink it further before sending.
