Is GIMP Good for Photo Editing?
The honest answer is: yes, for most people and most situations. But that answer comes with a few important details worth knowing before you commit your whole photography workflow to it.
What GIMP Does Well for Photo Editing
- Colour and exposure correction - Curves, Levels, Hue-Saturation, and Colour Balance give you full control over tone and colour. These are the tools used in 90% of everyday photo fixes.
- Retouching and cloning - The Clone tool, Heal tool, and Smudge tool cover spot removal, skin retouching, and object removal well.
- Background removal - Multiple selection tools handle this for portraits and products. The five removal methods cover everything from simple solid backgrounds to complex hair.
- High bit-depth editing - GIMP 3.x supports up to 32-bit per channel, which matters for detailed colour corrections without banding.
- Filters and effects - Sharpen, blur, noise reduction, lens distortion, and many more. There is also G'MIC, a powerful plugin that adds hundreds of additional filters.
Where GIMP Falls Short
No native RAW editing
GIMP cannot open RAW files from your camera directly. You need darktable or RawTherapee first, then send the result to GIMP.
No non-destructive adjustment layers
In Photoshop you can add a Curves adjustment layer that you can re-open and change later. In GIMP, adjustments are applied directly to pixels. Once done, you can only undo with Ctrl+Z - Not re-edit the settings.
Steeper learning curve than Lightroom
Lightroom is designed specifically for photo workflows. GIMP is a general image editor. If you are purely a photographer and want a simpler workflow, darktable is often a better free alternative.
