How to Uninstall GIMP from Windows or Mac
Maybe you want a clean reinstall, or you are switching to a different machine. Uninstalling GIMP is quick and straightforward on both Windows and Mac. The one thing to know upfront is that uninstalling the program does not automatically delete your settings, brushes, and plugins - Those sit in a separate folder. This guide covers both.
Uninstalling on Windows
-
1Close GIMP if it is running.
-
2Open Settings - Apps - Installed Apps (Windows 11) or Control Panel - Programs - Uninstall a Program (Windows 10).
-
3Find GIMP in the list and click Uninstall. Follow the prompts.
Removing Leftover Files on Windows
After uninstalling, your GIMP settings and plugins remain in:
C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Roaming\GIMP
If you want a completely clean removal, delete that folder. To find it quickly, press Win+R, type %APPDATA%, and press Enter. Then delete the GIMP folder inside.
Uninstalling on Mac
-
1Quit GIMP.
-
2Open Finder - Applications, find GIMP, and drag it to the Trash. Or right-click and choose Move to Trash.
-
3Empty the Trash.
Removing Leftover Files on Mac
GIMP stores settings in two places on Mac. Open Finder, press Cmd+Shift+G, and navigate to each:
~/Library/Application Support/GIMP
Plugins, scripts, and brushes you added
~/Library/Preferences/org.gimp.gimp.plist
GIMP preference file
Delete both if you want a completely clean slate. If you are reinstalling GIMP and want to keep your brushes and plugins, leave these folders alone - They will be picked up automatically by the new installation.
