How to Edit Text in GIMP
You typed some text in GIMP, moved on, and now you need to change it. Maybe the font is wrong, the color is off, or you just made a typo. GIMP keeps text editable as long as you have not flattened or merged the layer - Here is how to get back in and make changes.
How to Reopen a Text Layer for Editing
GIMP keeps text layers as editable vector-style objects until you flatten them. To edit an existing text layer:
- In the Layers panel, click the text layer you want to edit. It will have a "T" icon next to it.
- Press T to activate the Text tool.
- Click directly on the text in the canvas. A text editing cursor will appear.
If clicking on the canvas does not work, double-click the "T" icon next to the layer name in the Layers panel. This forces the Text tool to open that layer for editing.
Tip: If your Layers panel is not visible, open it with Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Layers or press Ctrl+L.
Changing the Text Content
Once you have clicked into the text layer with the Text tool:
- Use Ctrl+A to select all text, then type your replacement.
- Click and drag to select specific words, then type to replace them.
- Use the arrow keys to move the cursor to a specific position and type or delete normally.
Press Enter to add a new line inside the text box. To finish editing and deselect the text layer, press Escape or click another tool.
Changing Font, Size, and Color
With the Text tool active and the text layer selected:
- Select all or part of the text - Use Ctrl+A to select everything, or click and drag to select a portion.
- Change the font - In the Tool Options panel, click the font name field and type a new font name, or use the font browser button.
- Change the size - Edit the size field in Tool Options. The unit dropdown lets you switch between px, pt, and other units.
- Change the color - Click the color swatch in Tool Options. The Color Chooser will open. Pick your color and click OK.
Changes apply only to selected text. If you want to change the entire layer at once, select all with Ctrl+A first. Need more font options? The font installation guide covers how to add new fonts that show up here.
What to Do If the Text Layer Is Merged
If the text has been flattened, rasterized, or merged with other layers, it is no longer editable as text - it is just pixels. You will notice this because the layer icon in the Layers panel will not have the "T" symbol.
Your options:
- Undo - Press Ctrl+Z repeatedly until the text layer is restored. GIMP keeps undo history for the current session only - Once you close and reopen the file, undo is gone.
- Delete and retype - If undo is not available, use the Eraser or Clone tool to cover the old text, then add a new text layer on top.
- Work in XCF format - GIMP's native .xcf format preserves all layers including text layers. If you saved as JPEG or PNG, the text was baked in. Always save a working .xcf copy before exporting.
Text Editing Tips
| Shortcut | Action |
|---|---|
| T | Activate Text tool |
| Ctrl+A (inside text) | Select all text in layer |
| Escape | Finish editing, deselect text |
| Ctrl+L | Open Layers panel |
One common frustration: clicking on the canvas with the Text tool sometimes creates a new text layer instead of selecting an existing one. To avoid this, always click the layer in the Layers panel first, then switch to the Text tool.
Once you are comfortable editing text, the next things most people want to do are move the text to a new position or adjust the text box size for better line breaks.
Quick Recap
- Click the text layer in the Layers panel, press T, then click the text on canvas
- Use Ctrl+A to select all, or drag to select part of the text
- Change font, size, and color from Tool Options while text is selected
- Save as .xcf to keep text layers editable after closing
